Who is this course for?

The course is for the following people:

Trainee Legal Executives – As part of the academic stage on the route to becoming a Fellow of ILEX you need to undertake studies at this level in three out of a possible fourteen substantive law subjects and one linked practice paper out of a possible seven. So, for example you may wish to study as follows:

Substantive Law subjects - Contract Law, The Law of Tort, Employment Law

Linked Practice subject - Civil Litigation

You also need to undertake skills based tasks on Client Care/Legal Research

Once you have successfully passed all these subjects (and providing you have the Level 3 Diploma) you will become a Graduate Member of the Institute and able to use the designatory letters G.Inst.L.Ex.

Academic Exemption for LPC (through ILEX accreditation)

In order to become potentially exempt from the academic stage of qualifying as a solicitor, it is necessary to undertake study of ALL the so-called core subjects of law plus one other. These core subjects are as follows:

Criminal, Contract, Tort, Equity & Trusts, Public Law, European Union Law, Land.

In addition to these subjects you must study one other from a range of additional subjects offered by ILEX.

Single Subject Higher Diploma (SSHD)

Students can elect to take one subject to supplement their existing knowledge in an area of law or as part of an employer’s CPD scheme. A single subject qualification is awarded.

How long is the programme?

Each individual subject runs from September until June. If you are in full-time employment it is recommended that you study for one subject a year and no more than two. Although it is possible to undertake more, your studies need to be balanced against other commitments. This is an honours degree level programme and requires appropriate study time to be set-aside.

When will I have to attend formal teaching sessions?

You will have to attend one evening a week for each subject studied from 5.30-7.30 p.m. commencing W/B September 26th. 2011. The course runs for 30 weeks a year and you will be required to sit an ILEX accredited examination for each subject studied in June of each year. Portfolio submission is available over two ILEX set dates throughout the year.

Do I need any previous qualifications to be eligible to join the course?

No, not strictly  although for those wishing to become Legal Executives you should have successfully passed the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law. You will be required to provide a reference relating to your abilities from either, an employer, former employer or academic tutor. For those students who cannot  then you must have passed the Professional Diploma or have at least 2 GCE A Levels and English Language, grade C at GCSE level.

How is the programme taught and by whom?

The programme is taught by professional tutors who embrace all the modern teaching techniques available. In the classroom you can expect to receive a variety of teaching methods to encompass all learning styles and requirements supported by hi-tec facilities. We will always ensure that your time with us will be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Our reputation relies on your success so you can always be assured of high quality tuition.

How will my work be assessed?

The programme is assessed by traditional examinations set by ILEX and will consist of a three hours examination for each subject in June of each year. There is also the opportunity to sit some examinations in October if required. During the year your tutor will give you work to complete set at the same standard as the examinations and will provide you with detailed feedback on your performance. You will also have the opportunity to study past examination papers in the latter stages of each programme year.

Will I need to study at times other than in the classroom?

The answer to this is yes. However, we are all individuals working in different ways. In our opinion it will be necessary for you to devote a minimum of four extra hours a week for each subject to your studies. This might involve research or completing assignments or simply reading chapters in books and manuals. How much additional study is a subjective decision however, as examinations approach it will increase substantially.

How much does it cost?

Each subject unit will cost £600 for private paying students and £600 plus VAT at 20% for those students having their fees paid by their employers (if VAT registered)  If you are a private paying student you can pay in two stages, 50% on enrolment followed by three monthly instalments by Direct Debit) (add £20 administration costs). We accept cash/cheques and credit cards. There are additional charges payable to ILEX for examination fees. You will need to purchase a recommended course text book.
